Shopping at Sam’s Club- The Coupon Challenge Day 7

I am someone who does the bulk of my grocery shopping at Sam’s Club. Sam’s normally will not take coupons although, I have heard stories of individual stores doing so. You may want to ask at your store. Instead, Sam’s Club offers discounts associate with larger quantities and what they call “eValues”.

So, the question is, do we really need to collect coupons if shopping at Sam’s Club will save us more money?

Coupons for your weekly basics don’t happen every week. Sam’s Club does things a little different. For a membership fee, you gain access to bulk quantities of items with the idea that you are saving money buying in bulk. But, are you really saving money when compared to other stores  such as Walmart?

Let’s compare the stores.

On day 3 of the coupon challenge, I compared 5 basic items that I purchase on a weekly basis.

Those items were;

  • Gallon Milk
  • Eggs
  • Bread- regular
  • Canned Dog Food- Pedigree
  • Ground Beef
Item Sam’s Store #2 Store #3
Gallon Milk 1% $2.79 3.06 2.89
Eggs(18 large) $1.94 $2.46 $2.47
Bread- regular store brand n/a .97 $1
Canned Dog Food- Pedigree $.50/can .68 .80
Ground Beef chuck ? $5.28 $4.09

We have a basic business Sam’s membership which costs $35.  If you were to compare the three items in the chart above that I had prices for, I’d be saving nearly 97 cents per week or $50.44 a year. That alone covers the $35 membership.

EVALUES is an extra way that Sams Club offers discounts.

This is a program that comes with the Plus memberships. Sams Club says there are no coupons to clip and no rebate forms to complete and mail with eValues. Sam’s Club Plus Members  receive customized offers tailored to them and discounts will be automatically taken at the register using their existing Membership cards.

Personally, I tried this program and found it confusing and somewhat difficult to use. You are suppose to check for the daily values at a kiosk in the store. However, we found the kiosk to not always be working correctly. You never really know what the deals are one and it felt a bit ‘big brotherish’ that supposedly the evalues would know what we purchase on a regular basis. I love Sams Club, just not the evalues.

Sam’s will offer open days for people to try it out.
There is also a Collegiate Membership available for around $15.

We get a free Sam’s Club membership thru my hubs’ work, but never use it. I have price compared Sam’s to Walmart, and there seems to be little dif. in the prices. Aldi is much cheaper and most other things I get cheaper at our local grocery store using coupons via The Grocery Game. I have friends who love Costco, but tell me that they don’t really save more money except for fresh produce and spotlight sales. Do you have an Aldi near you?
