How to shop at Target- 10 Tips- The Challenge

There is something to say about shopping at what some call ‘Targee’. The stores are clean and the employees are always in a great mood and want to help you. The people shopping there are different from other stores as well.

About Target

Target was officially in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1902 as the Dayton Dry Goods Company. In 1962, the company opened its first Target store, developed on the concept of upscale discount retailing  .  Target grew and eventually became the largest division of Dayton Hudson Corporation. Dayton Hudson Corporation became   Target Corporation in 2000.

There is a Target store in every state in America  Vermont.
Target is the second largest discount retailer in the United States, behind Walmart.

In 2011, Target announced its expansion into Canada. Target will operate 100 to 150 stores in Canada by 2013, through its purchase of leaseholds from the Canadian chain Zellers.

Target Stores Coupon Policy

Target says that Coupons are a great way to save even more when shopping with us, and it’s easy to use them at  their stores.

• Target accepts one manufacturer coupon and one Target coupon for the same item (unless prohibited)
• Super Target coupons can be used in any Target store if the store carries the item
• They  gladly accept valid internet coupons

Guidelines for how coupons can be redeemed at Target.

When accepting coupons, they use the following guidelines:

• They  accept two kinds of coupons: Target-issued coupons and manufacturer-issued.
• They’ll accept one Target coupon and one manufacturer coupon for the same item, unless either coupon prohibits it.
• Coupon amount may be reduced if it exceeds the value of the item after other discounts or coupons are applied.
• They can’t give cash back if the face value of a coupon is greater than the purchase value of the item.
• They can’t accept coupons from other retailers, or coupons for products not carried in our stores.
• All valid coupons should be presented to the cashier while you’re checking out.

Many true bargain hunter’s may stay away from Target because in their eyes, the over-all shopping experience may be more expensive than somewhere like Walmart. But, others will say otherwise.
Consider my haul;

Retail Value of these items: $92.96
I Paid $31.02.

The Secret to The Thrill of the Target Hunt

One of the biggest secrets of shopping at Target is knowing their mark-down strategy.

For normal mark-downs, check the endcaps closest to the walls.Usually, Target will follow this schedule:

Monday – Electronics, Kids Clothing and Stationary
Tuesday –  Women’s Clothing, Domestics, Pets and Market
Wednesday –  Toys, Lawn & Garden, Men’s Clothing, Health and Beauty items (H&B)
Thursday – Home items, Lingerie, Sporting Goods, Shoes, Music/Movies, Books, Decor and Luggage
Friday – Hardware, Auto, Cosmetics,  and Jewelry

Holiday and seasonal are a bit different. After the holiday, they will mark things 50% for three days.  Then they will mark down  items 75% off the fourth day after the holiday, for three days. Finally, Target marks thing down 90% off the seventh day after holiday, for 1-2 days.

We hit Target on the 7th day after Valentines Day and guess what!

How to shop at Target- 10 Tips

1. Like we seem to tell you for everywhere else, print your coupons before you leave the house. Target’s Printable Grocery Coupons.

2. Target actually has some cool phone apps. I love the scanner and the coupons I can load to my phone.

3. Sign up for the Target credit card -Save 5% When Using Your Target REDcard and they’ll send you coupons too!

4. Shop Daily Deals at Target.com. Always Free Shipping.

5. As you read above, get to know their mark-down strategy.

6. Make sure you sign up to have your favorite school earn money with every purchase you make. I’ve been doing this for 10 years for a school my kids don’t even attend any more.

7. Get text alerts sent to your phone.

8. Target allows coupon and deal stacking! Example: I bought Betty Crocker Cookie mix- originally $2.19. Target gave it a ‘temporary price cut’ to $1.50. I had a coupon for 40 cents off. I paid $1.10 for the $2.19 cookie mix. Thank goodness I remembered to print out those coupons before I left the house!

9.Check the mark-down racks for discounted deals on designer items. Remember when Isaac Mazrahi was at Target? Where else could you get an Isaac dress for $10?

10. Get Target Coupon Codes

I have always been one of those that went to Target for somewhere different to shop than Wal Mart but not really expecting to find deals. You have taught me so many things in just this one post than I have learned in all my trips to the store. I really appreciate this info as I am trying to get into couponing more seriously. Thank you.

Wow, that is amazing you were able to buy $90 worth of items for $30.
I don’t think I’ve heard before about being able to use both kinds of coupons together at Target. That’s great to know!
