Do it yourself- Homemade Lip Gloss
Making your own lip gloss can be a fun and easy project. This is a great way to save a lot of money on something that can be essential to your routine.
If you have an empty vial, this will work best. You can also purchase small containers at your local discount store. Simply wash these containers/vials out and you’ll be ready to use them.
• Vegetable based shortening product such as Crisco
• Petroleum Jelly (always seem available to the dollar stores) for a gloss.
• Paraffin Wax rather than Petroleum Jelly if you want more of a balm for dry lips.
• Extract such as vanilla or mint for taste (remember, you won’t be eating this)
• Koolaid packet for color. Koolaid with sugar added is not recommended.
• Olive Oil- to help with consistency
• Microwave-safe bowl
Start small to get the feel for this and to minimize waste.
Melt approximately 1tbs of shortening 1tsp of Petroleum Jelly (or grated wax) with a few drops of olive oil in your microwave-safe bowl for approximately 30 seconds. Use a Q-tip or toothpick to stir. You can repeat if your mix is not melted to your consistency,
Add a your coloring (Koolaid) by the dash, stirring it into the mixture, until you have the color you desire. You can do the same with your flavoring as well, however, don’t taste it as you risk burning yourself. You’ll have to go by smell.
If your mixture has hardened or is not your desired consistency, place the microwave-safe bowl back into the microwave for 15 second increments stirring often.
Add your mixture to your container. It can help to pour your mixture into a baggie first and snip the corner to adjust to a small container opening. Whatever you do, you will need to wait until your mixture is not hot as you don’t want to burn yourself your melt your container.
Place your container in the refrigerator to cool for about 30 minutes to an hour.
Some people will experiment with the ingredients to personalize it. For example, using a small amount of coconut or vitamin oils.Tweet
